Have you ever wondered what happens inside a bakery before the first customer walks through the door?
Long before most people are thinking about lunch or dessert, The Right Slice is already awake. The lights come on, the ovens begin warming, and the quiet kitchen slowly fills with the familiar sounds of mixing bowls, rolling pins, timers, metal pans, and people settling into the rhythm of the day.
There is something peaceful about those early hours. Outside, Kauaʻi is just beginning to stir. The roads are quieter, the morning air is cooler, and the sun may not be fully up yet. Inside the bakery, flour is being measured, fillings are being prepared, pans are being lined up, and the first pies of the day are beginning to take shape.

Scratch baking is not especially glamorous. It is careful, repetitive work that depends on timing, temperature, consistency, and attention to detail. A crust cannot be rushed simply because the clock is moving. A filling has to taste right before it ever reaches the oven. Every tray must be checked, every label needs to be accurate, and every finished pie should meet the same standard as the one before it.
Bakery work also requires a great deal of communication. One person’s job often connects directly to the next person’s task. Dough needs to be ready before a pie can be assembled. Fillings need to be properly prepared and cooled. Finished products need to be stored, labeled, and placed where the rest of the team can find them.
A successful morning depends on everyone doing their part and paying attention to what is happening around them. It is a team effort, even when the finished pie looks simple sitting in its box.
