Labor Day seems like the perfect opportunity to talk about something customers don’t always get to see. The work behind the pie. When you walk into The Right Slice, you see the finished product. You see pies lined up in the case, slices ready to go and people behind the counter helping customers. What you don’t see are all the steps that happened before that pie made it into the case. A bakery starts early. There’s dough to make and roll, fillings to prepare, ingredients to measure, ovens to manage, dishes to wash, supplies to restock and orders to organize. Then there are phones ringing, customers walking in, special orders being picked up and the occasional surprise that makes everyone change plans halfway through the day. Running a bakery is definitely a team sport.

Freshly Baked Kauai Pies

Everyone has a part. And yes, there are a LOT of dishes. Seriously. Where do they all come from? Just when you think you’ve washed everything, someone walks around the corner carrying another bowl. But that’s the reality of making food from scratch. It takes people, time and a lot of hands working together. We’re fortunate to have our employees show up and do the workday. Some days are easy. Some days are exhausting. Some days are controlled chaos. And some days include somebody asking, “Has anyone seen the _____?” while everyone stops what they’re doing and starts looking. Anyone who has ever worked in a kitchen knows exactly what we’re talking about. So today, on Labor Day, we want to say mahalo to our team and to all of the hardworking people across Kauaʻi.
Restaurant workers, hotel employees, farmers, construction crews, teachers, healthcare workers, landscapers, retail employees, small-business owners and everyone else who keeps this island moving every single day. We see you. We appreciate you. And if today happens to be one of your days off, we hope you get to put your feet up for a while. Preferably with something delicious nearby.
Happy Labor Day from all of us at The Right Slice
