Making Room for a Sweet September

How did we reach the final day of August so quickly?

It feels like we were just welcoming the month with summer adventures, community events, beach days, and long evenings under the Kauaʻi sky. Now school routines are back in full swing, September is waiting at the door, and the final days of summer are beginning to feel a little more precious. The end of a month is a natural time to pause. We think about what kept us busy, what made us laugh, the people we spent time with, and the moments we wish we could enjoy all over again. Maybe your favorite August memory was a day at the beach when everyone stayed longer than planned. Perhaps it was an evening at a local market, a family dinner, an art walk, or a quiet sunset that made you stop what you were doing and simply look around. Sometimes the moments we remember most are not the big, carefully planned occasions. They are the simple ones: catching up with someone you had not seen in a while, bringing home dinner when no one felt like cooking, or opening a box of pie and watching everyone suddenly gather around the table. At The Right Slice, those everyday moments are a big part of why we love what we do.

Throughout August, we welcomed local families, longtime customers, new visitors, and people returning to Kauaʻi who told us that stopping for pie had become part of their island tradition. We watched customers carefully choose flavors, debate sweet versus savory, and promise to share before deciding that perhaps everyone needed their own slice. We heard stories about where our pies were going. Some were headed to the beach. Others were being brought to birthdays, family dinners, work gatherings, and homes where someone simply needed a little cheering up. We may bake the pie, but our customers give it a story. Once a pie leaves our bakery, it becomes part of someone else’s day. It might be the easy dinner that gives a tired family more time together. It might be the dessert that keeps everyone sitting around the table and talking. It might become someone’s first taste of lilikoi, their favorite Kauaʻi vacation treat, or the surprise brought home by a thoughtful friend.

As we prepare to welcome September, we are excited for cooler mornings, new flavors, more community gatherings, and the many celebrations that the final months of the year will bring. The seasons may feel different here on Kauaʻi, but there is still a noticeable shift as summer begins to wind down and everyone settles into a new routine.
