It seems like we were just talking about summer, and suddenly we’ve turned another page on the calendar. Of course, September on Kauaʻi doesn’t exactly mean pulling sweaters out of the closet and watching the leaves change. Our version of September still includes sunshine, warm days, slippers, trips to the beach and if we’re lucky a nice trade wind blowing through. But even here, September feels a little different.
Summer vacations start winding down, families settle back into their school routines, and before we know it, we’ll be talking about Halloween, Thanksgiving and the holidays. If you work in a bakery, you know those holidays have a funny way of arriving VERY quickly! Here at The Right Slice, a new month means another month of early mornings, rolling dough, filling pie shells, answering phones, helping customers decide which flavor they really want and trying to keep up with everything happening behind the scenes. Some days everything goes exactly according to plan. Other days? Well, let’s just say bakeries have a way of keeping you humble. One thing that never gets old is seeing who walks through our doors. We have our regular customers who know exactly what they want before they even get here. Then we have visitors who have never been in before and stare at the pie case trying to figure out how they’re possibly supposed to choose just one flavor.

Our advice? Sometimes you shouldn’t choose just one. September is also going to be a fun month around Kauaʻi. There are markets, community gatherings, cultural events and, of course, the Kauaʻi Marathon coming up this weekend. Throughout the month, we’ll use this blog to share a little bit of all of it. Sometimes we’ll talk about pie. Sometimes we’ll talk about Kauaʻi. Sometimes we’ll take you behind the scenes of the bakery. And sometimes we might just ask you a question because we really want to hear what you think. So come back every few days and see what we’re talking about. And if you happen to be driving through Kalaheo in between blog posts, you know where to find us. We’ll be the place with the pie.
